Gas and oil are non renewable sources of energy. They also cause much damage to the environment. There is a danger they might soon also be depleted from the earth. On the other hand, hybrid cars are environment friendly. They source of energy they use is renewable and therefore they pose much less threat to the world. Hybrid cars are efficient and save money on fueling.

Performance wise, hybrid cars are rubbish. At the stage they currently are, they are more than likely to break down after traveling every few miles. If you buy a hybrid car, leave for office an hour earlier than you used to before, because hybrid cars are much slower than normal cars. Because they have very less energy to run with, they are made with as light bodies as possible. We want to protect the environment to protect our children. But if you’re planning to buy them a hybrid car to do so, the chances of them being flattened by some bigger car are far more. So if you want to keep your children safe, why not buy them a Land Rover instead? And then there’s the matter of power again. With the amount of power a hybrid can provide, imagine the trouble and time it would take for you to reach a high altitude point with a fairly steep road, that is, if you would ever manage to get up there on that car.

Whether hybrid cars will be the future of the car industry, one cannot say for sure. But one thing is certain, where it stands today is quite for from a point where it will replace the petrol or gas powered cars.

Consumers must always be aware of any new information that could affect their decision to invest on these vehicles.

It is obvious that out of these three main benefits, tax credit is definitely the green light for these buyers to opt for Hybrids. What they do not know is that, tax credit is also subject to certain conditions which will one way or another affect them as a buyer and the vehicle as well.

Before proceeding to invest on a green car, whether as a whole or in part, it is recommended that you conduct your own research for the tax credit offered each year by the federal government, also known as the New Energy Tax Credit. Digging some further info will not only educate the consumer on the scheme, but will also give them a greater understanding of the conditions imposed on these tax credits. Conditions such as, these tax credits or incentives is not at all permanent and is in fact being subjected to discontinuation or worse, a complete phase out.

This tax incentive proved to be very rewarding to buyers of hybrid cars after December 31, 2005. Records show that about USD 2,000 tax refunds has been granted for vehicles purchased before 2006 and on one hand, vehicles purchased after December 31, 2005 were eligible to refunds as high as USD 3400, which is a remarkable difference in the amount of tax refund.

The list also includes several gas-saving green vehicles that are not considered as hybrids.

Again, before investing on these vehicles, buyers must strictly take note that while these vehicles are eligible for New Energy Tax Credit scheme, buying any of these vehicles does not give them an assurance of a tax credit.

You see, tax refunds eligibility of a vehicle depends on the mark of sales each model or make has reached. For example, if the number of sales for a certain eligible vehicle has reached its maximum, only 50% of the number of vehicles specified by the Tax Credit scheme will be entitled to the incentive, this system follows once the next mark of sales is attained, this time only 25% will be entitled to the tax refund. A consumer will not be entitled to a tax refund if a maximum sales target of a certain green or hybrid car is achieved.

Furthermore, tax credits will not be rewarded to consumers for Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the Toyota Camry Hybrid, as well as several Lexus gas-saving models if purchases are made after October 1, 2007. The same applies for purchases made after January 1, 2009 for Honda Accord Hybrid and Honda Civic Hybrid.

Now, if you are really that interested to invest in Hybrid vehicles mainly due to tax refund despite the gradual discontinuation of this incentive, it will therefore be worthwhile to do your research as there are still some vehicles advised to be still eligible for tax refunds, these in particular, are the upcoming 2009 and 2010 hybrid models.

Taking some time to educate ourselves on these few points won’t cost us anything. It will in fact prove to be very useful before making a final decision. Let’s not forget we are investing our own money for these types of vehicles. Being well informed before hand could result to your main target, a good hybrid car investment plus the benefit of a tax refund which only means, MONEY.

I will begin by emphasizing the point that I don’t know everything there is to know about this so called “impending oil crisis”. And I’m not sure if there is anyone who knows everything there is to know about this impending oil crisis too. However, I am fairly certain that the hybrid cars wouldn’t be a prospective solution to the problem; not at least for a few more years.

One would notice a massive influx of hybrid cars on the roads today and yet, did nothing to help put a dent in the oil problems; but instead made a quandary with regards to car-pooling. As early as January 2005, hybrids car owners were allowed to use car pool lanes, even when driving alone. Given the fact that thousands of hybrid cars have been sold since 1999, some of the car pool lanes are becoming more congested than the regular traffic lanes they’re supposed to lighten.

According to a compiled report for the past eight years made by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the pervasive presence of the supposedly fuel economy cars have saved only a measly total of 5.5 million oil barrels. It’s a rather distressing contrast against the approximate 8.5 million barrels a day to power the present usage of the light, private vehicles. But even then, researchers are very optimistic with regards to fuel economy cars. They have concluded that for fuel economy cars to have an impact, they have to at least cover more than 50% of the car population in the United States. And given the growing sales of these fuel economy cars, it’s just a matter of time.

On a more personal note, can fuel economy cars help you cut back on gasoline consumption? Yes they could, depending on your driving habits. However, if you consider the initial cost of the hybrids, you may want to reconsider buying one. One of the biggest challenges of the fuel economy cars is that it takes so long to repay that extra expense of purchasing them. Even in the best-case scenario (as with one of the most popular hybrids, the Toyota Prius), five years time is already considered lucky. One could purchase a standard 4-cylinder Toyota for a much lower price and the fuel economy on these models are just outstanding. Again, this will all depend on you’re driving habits. Personally, being a city driver, I get excellent mileage with my four cylinder.

So what is your reasoning to purchase a fuel economy car? Is it for the environmental aspects? Whatever it may be, personally I wouldn’t purchase a hybrid car for purely economic reasons.

While a hybrid car in general does saves you some money on gas, you may want to bear these points in mind when looking to buy a hybrid car.

1) Hybrid cars generally are more expensive than conventional gas powered cars. The price difference can be as much as $10,000. Hybrid cars are still new to consumers and may take a while before prices drop.

2) The batteries used in a hybrid car is different from a conventional car. The prices are much higher. They are about $2000 more expensive. However, hybrid car batteries have a longer life span as well.

3) The government has a tax deduction for hybrid cars owners. The hybrid car tax deduction varies from year to year but in general, you can save at least a couple of thousand dollars.

4) The cost of maintenance for a hybrid car is also higher. Also it has more complex systems and engine, a normal mechanic may not know how to repair it. In most cases, you need to send back to the hybrid car manufacturer for maintenance and repair and the cost is not cheap.

5) Hybrid cars use special tires that are wore out more easily than conventional cars. These hybrid car tires cost more and need to be replaced around 25,000 miles.
